The history of wine in the Pelješac region is rich in culture. It can be dated back 2500 years ago. In a Illyrian cave near the Northern tip of the Peninsula, ceramic wine glasses handed to the Illyrians by Greeks have been found. It is believed, that wine was produced and consumed at this time. The Roman Empire conquered and a more formal wine culture began. Evident by the many Roman Villa Rusticas located in areas ideal for grape growing. A Villa Rustica was a self-sustained country house built for the upper class. They can be found in: Dingač, Postup, Perna, Viganj, Trstenik, and Žuljana; some of the most recognized wine producing regions in Croatia. Shellfish is also a trademark for this region, embedded in their culture. Bearing influences from Greek and Roman cuisine, as well as Italian (especially Venetian era). Being blessed by one of the most beautiful seas it is thriving with fresh seafood and organic simple ingredients to accompany. Every nature lover with appreciation for good food will bask in this opportunity to experience the pleasing beauty of Pelješac, it's exceptional cuisine and all wonderful nature that surrounds. Meeting point for the tour is in Dubrovnik followed by a visit to Ston and Mali Ston bay, upon where there will be an excursion by boat to a shellfish farm and tasting of oysters.
