The Dalmatian coast is not only surrounded by natural beauty and crystal clear waters but these very seas have a deep culture, one of them being a very long history of mariculture. Traces of primitive oyster farming were noted by Roman chroniclers. The first written documents date from the time of the Dubrovnik Republic. Shellfish cultivation in Mali Ston Bay is based on only two species: The European Flat Oyster, Ostrea edulis, and the mussel, Mytilus galloprovinicialis.
Oysters are fullest and most delicious in March, when St Joseph's Day in celebrated. You will have the opportunity to taste freshly opened oysters fragrant of the sea around at the restaurants in Ston and Mali Ston. The Festival of Oysters is a gastro event which offers oysters and dishes along with the Dalmatian song 'Klape' and a glass of good wine from Pelješac vineyards. An all round Dalmatian experience bringing you closer to local specialities and culture so not only can you enjoy the nature but the rich culture of this gem on the coast.
