Excursion's informations

The Dalmatian coast is not only surrounded by natural beauty and crystal clear waters but these very seas have a deep culture, one of them being a very long history of mariculture. Traces of primitive oyster farming were noted by Roman chroniclers. The first written documents date from the time of the Dubrovnik Republic.

Shellfish cultivation in Mali Ston Bay is based on only two species: The European Flat Oyster, Ostrea edulis, and the mussel, Mytilus galloprovinicialis. The cultivation cycle begins with collecting wild spat, after which young oysters are cemented on ropes in a way special to this area. Mussels are reared mainly using floating or fixed parks, using nylon "sockets".

Oysters are fullest and most delicious in March, when St Joseph's Day in celebrated. You will have the opportunity to taste freshly opened oysters fragrant of the sea around, on this day of celebration (19 March) at the restaurants in Ston and Mali Ston. The Festival of Oysters is a gastro event which offers oysters and dishes along with the Dalmatian song 'Klape' and a glass of good wine from Pelješac vineyards. An all round Dalmatian experience bringing you closer to local specialities and culture so not only can you enjoy the nature but the rich culture of this gem on the coast.

The tour can start upon request with a transfer from Dubrovnik to the meeting point. The start is at Mali Ston Bay and carry the excursion on by boat to a shellfish farm where we indulge in oyster tasting. On request there can be an arranged lunch in a typical Croatian fish restaurant and transfer back to Dubrovnik. Other options of transfer are: Split, Mostar, Makarska, Neum
