Mljet resides most southerly and easterly of the larger Adriatic islands of the Dalmatia region of Croatia. The northwestern part of the island was proclaimed a National park in 1960 because of its unique nature as well as its historical and cultural monuments including the marine area. The park's land is covered with Aleppo pine and holm oak forest surrounded by serene transparent waters.
The central parts of the park are made up of the salt lakes, Veliko jezero (Big Lake) with the Isle of St. Mary and Malo jezero (Small Lake). The lake systems present a unique geological and oceanografic karst phenomenon. The small island of St. Mary, located on the Big Lake is home to an ancient benedictine monastery and church from the 12th century.
As well as boundless nature and plush greenery Mljet is rich with historical and cultural heritage that can be traced from the Illyrian tribes,Roman Empire, and to recent history the Dubrovnik Republic.
Our hiking tour of the National Park includes a visit to St. Mary Island on the Big lake followed by a climb onto the peak of Montokuc, reaching a height of 250 meters. The peak offers one of the most beautiful and interesting views of the Park, Lakes and St. Mary Island. We climb for about one hour and a half, afterwards descending to the Big lake coast.
