Brač island, Blaca desert
Start point: Bol
Entrances: pay upon arrival
Apart from its coves and transparent blissfully unspoiled water, its vineyards and olive groves, the island is known for its interesting history and architecture. Here above all, Blaca hermitage, is one of the most important and interesting architectural complexes of Brač. In the 16th century the hermits arrived and settled in a cave. During the centuries they constructed the famous complex which has been the center of life, culture, economy and science. It is the place called "Blaca desert". Named after desert because of the scarce nature surrounding the picturesque monastery it was home to generations of monks. For a period in history it was the main school attended by pupils from the small surrounding villages. The monastery holds the second largest telescope in Europe. Today it is a museum that leads us through history and tells us stories of ancient times. We start our walking tour in the Blaca cove and head towards the Blaca desert and hermitage. After a little break in the serene and calm atmosphere, there is a option to visit the museum (extra charge).
