Railroad of Ciro, Dubrovnik & Popovo Valley: Cycle and discover our natural heritage
Meeting point & Transfer: Dubrovnik Start point: Čepikuće border
The Railroad of Ciro is historically remembered for it´s steam locomotives, it passes through the landscapes of Herzegovina starting in Mostar alongside the Neretva river all the way across the border of Croatia, ending in Dubrovnik. The construction of this trail started in 1898 and ended in 1901. Today this trail is reconstructed into a cycling track.
Cycling through the Herzegovina Hilly karst from Čepikuće to Ciro railway station Ravno. After a short break we go for a tour of the old Zavala railway station transfomed to a restaurant with local cuisine, where we have a beautiful view of Popovo polje, from there we will visit Vjetrenica cave and the museum of Railroad Of Ciro. Near the cave is a orthodox monastery from the 13th century.
The visit to the cave is followed by cycling from Zavala to Ciro station Hum and stopping at various resting points and observation posts. The trip is continued by crossing the border with Croatia and cycling towards Dubrovnik, where the excursion ends.
Vjetrenica cave & Railroad of Ciro museum
Vjetrenica also known as the blowhole, is the largest cave in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the world this cave is one of the richest in terms of it´s subterranean biodiversity: among more than two hundred different species are registered in it.
