Meeting point: Pazin cave
Guide Duration: 2:00h
In our guided tour, we will visit historical and cultural sights.
Pazin Cave is the most picturesque example of natural forces at work on the karst Istrian terrain. Under the walls of a thousand year old Pazin Castle, right on the border of the grey and red Istria, the biggest Istrian stream Pazinčica makes its flow through the underground all the way to the valley of the river Raša. The Pazin Abyss is protected as significant landscape. The protected area comprises the canyon and the abyss of the Pazinčica, about 500 metres long and about 100 metres deep, and the Pazin Cave.
The famous French writer of adventure and science fiction novels, Jules Verne, dedicated the main dramaturgical role in his novel Mathias Sandorf (1885) to Pazin Cave and Kaštela. Even today, at the end of June, the days of Jules Verne, the Festival of Fantastic Literature in August and several other activities that popularize the works of this writer, and around the world promote Pazin as the town of Jules Verne. Pazin´s Kaštela is situated on the exit of the cave where is the museum of the town. The castle is mentioned as far back as 983 and has had great significance throughout history. For centuries it was the administrative seat of the principality, and since the 50s of the last century, it is a museum.
