Njegoš Mausoleum & National park Lovćen: Discover the heritage with a guide
Meeting point: entrance in the NP
Guide Duration: 2:00h
In our guided tour, we will visit historical and cultural sights.
Lovćen is a mountain and national park in southwestern Montenegro. Mount Lovćen rises from the borders of the Adriatic basin closing the bays of Boka Kotorska and making the hinterland to the coastal town of Kotor. The mountain has two imposing peaks, Štirovnik and Jezerski vrh. The mountain slopes are rocky, with numerous fissures, pits and deep depressions giving a specific look and unmistakable beauty.
Standing on the border between two completely different natural wholes, the sea and the mainland, Lovćen is under the influence of both climates. The National Park encompasses the central and the highest part of Lovćen mountain massif. It was proclaimed a national park in 1952. Besides Lovćen´s natural beauties, the national park was established to protect rich historical, cultural and architectural heritage of the area.
Exactly 461 stairs lead to Jezerski Vrh, which is located at an altitude of 1660 m above sea level, where the Mausoleum dedicated to Petar II Petrovic Njegos was opened in 1974, making it the mausoleum at the highest altitude in the world at the time. The location of today´s Mausoleum housed a humble chapel which Njegos constructed in 1845 to be his eternal resting place.
