Trakošćan castle: Discover the heritage with a guide
Meeting point: Castle
Guide Duration: 2:00h

In our guided tour, we will visit historical and cultural sights. Trakoscan was built in the late 13th century, found in northwestern Croatia with purpose for a defense system containing a small observational fortress for monitoring the road from Ptuj to Bednja Valley. According to legend, Trakoscan was named after the Thracian fortress (ARX Thacorum). Another preserved legend says, it is named after the knights Drachenstein who in the early Middle Ages, ruled the region.

Eventually the castle shared fate with it´s neighboring towns and estates and was divided through a changing of owners. In these divisions, Trakošćan a unique property at first belonged to warlord Jan Vitovac then to Ivanis Korvin who gave it to his deputy John Gyulay. In 1954 a museum was established with a permanent exhibition. Today the castle is preserved and owned by the Republic of Croatia. It is a cultural heritage and protected as a historical entity, which consists of the castle, the building next to the castle, park and forest park with a lake. Overall this tour will give you insight into a rich past of culture and history with sightseeing pleasures of natural beauty.
