Ptuj is one of the eleven urban municipalities in Slovenia. It is located on the Drava, downstream from Maribor, in the traditional region of Styria and in the natural region of the Pannonian Plain, in the district
of Podravska.


The city has a triangular silhouette and is one of the oldest cities in Slovenia. It has a long and rich history because it is located at a strategic intersection of the Drava River that marks the boundary at the bottom. The first settlements date from the Stone Age, but the city was particularly prosperous under the Roman Empire. It was a military fort called Poetovium. In 69, it is there that Vespasian was proclaimed emperor by his legions. The first written mention of Ptuj dates from the same year. The city of Petovion1 was the base camp of the Legio XIII Gemina in Pannonia. Ptuj owes its name to the Emperor Trajan who established the colony and named it Colonia Ulpia Traiana Poetovio. Later, she became part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. At the top of the city is the Ptuj Castle which protects the two monasteries below: Dominican and Minority After the fall of the Roman Empire, Ptuj regained his rights in the 10th century. Today, the castle is a fortress rebuilt in the 18th and 19th century.

Come and taste the specialties of the country such as wine: Slovenia is full of good white wines thanks to the culture of welschriesling and sipon, the local variety of the famous Hungarian furmint, the soup: with mushrooms or meat, Carniola sausage: made from first choice pork and salted bacon, seasoned with garlic and pepper then smoked, börek, also called burek : a very fatty salty pastry filled with cream cheese, spinach or even meat, gibanica: composed of poppy seeds, fresh cheese, nuts and apples. Ptuj is the center of the Koranti (Kurenti) carnival, masked characters covered with sheepskins that are supposed to hunt winter and bring spring back. The carnival lasts several days, but the Koranti do not occur until the end of winter. The Koranti of the plain of Ptuj are feathered, those of the Haloze and Lancova vas wear horns. Other characters (orači in Slovenian, which means "plowmen") are called pokač, plužarji and jajčar. Ptuj is an old city where it is possible to live many new experiences. The castle overlooks the city whose oldest wine cellars overlook the streets where one of the most colorful carnivals in the world takes place with the famous characters of the kurents, whose originality has also been recognized by UNESCO .
