A few days ago, the renowned
British daily The Guardian published a recommendation of 23 European destinations to which you should go on vacation this year, 2023. Among the well-known European destinations such as Leipzig, Malaga and Copenhagen, there was also one Croatian place -
Imotski, an old town located in the south of Croatia, at the crossroads of Dalmatian Zagora and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Imotski has all the characteristics of a coastal town, thanks mostly to the climate and the urban architecture of the old town core. Stone houses, steep narrow streets with stone steps are witnesses of the former appearance of this place, whose old core is also protected. Several buildings with beautiful facades and iron fences from the Art Nouveau era speak of stylistic currents that did not pass by this environment either.
The Guardian described this area as one of
the most beautiful inland Croatian regions. He goes on to describe eleven lakes dotting the karst landscape surrounding the town of Imotski, and says that the most dramatic, Blue Lake, borders the town. Shrub-covered limestone cliffs rise from a huge sinkhole filled with vivid blue water. Those who follow the winding path to the bottom of the valley can swim in this lake, says the Guardian, and along with the Biokovo Nature Park, the Imot Lakes are candidates for
UNESCO status in 2023.
And indeed, the Imot´s Lakes, with their fascinating steep cliffs and beautiful colors of their clean and clear waters, captivate with unearthly beauty. And with all the lakes in the Imotska Krajina - which were created by the collapse of underwater caves - there are numerous legends worth researching. We will add that this hidden treasure of the Croatian interior is also teeming with stories about stećci, beliefs, superstitions, Biokovo fairies, curses, ice merchants from Biokovo caves, kamishniks, the French road, stone processing and klačina.

The Guadiana article goes on to state that there are many ways to have fun in the Imotski region: kayaking on the Vrljika river, hiking the hills, enjoying the view from the medieval fortress of Topana in Imot, and visiting the vineyards.
The gastronomic offer is not negligible either - the ambitious
Tri Sunca restaurant was recently opened in Imotski, which offers a five-course menu dedicated to classics from Imotski, such as braised veal tongue and celery, fried frog's legs, mint and hot sauce, "rafiola" stuffed with tingula from domestic chicken, contemporary versions of pashticada 2.0 and the favorite tomato as a dessert. Their wine list is focused on Dalmatian and Herzegovina wines.
